Sold a car that got towed! Am I liable

I sold a car in CA. and made myself the lein holder on the pink slip as I had not yet been fully paid. the car got towed from the side of the freeway while the registered owner was in the hospital. When I found out, The fees wanted for the tow was well beyond the cars value so I and the registered owner let them keep it. Now a collection agency is trying to collect $1500 in fees for a $500 car from me. They are threatening to put a negative report on my credit reports. Am I still liable? And how can I prevent them from messing with my credit.
