Son has gambling problems

What is the name of your state? Kentucky

My son is 16 and found his way on to a online gambling web site and used to debt card to play real money games and has gotten himself into debt. I think that since he is a minor and since the website should have not let him played and the bank should not have let him use his debt card on a gambling web site that he should not have to pay off these debts. Can anyone help? Thanks

How did the website know that he was a minor? Who's debit card did he use?

The website did not know he was a minor because they obviously did not check and he used his own debt card.

Good point.

Shoot for the foul balck heart of the online gaming industry.

People aren't magically transported to the bahamas to gamble legally

Tell the casino to pound sand.

Right, because that's legal. I'm guessing he also pressed the little button that stated he was over 18, right?

"Running your ss#" does not necessarily match up with your birth date.

You should stop making excuses for your son, and take his DEBIT card away until he turns 18.

I bet the bank and the website are saying, "That 16 year old's parents should monitored his online activities more closely and shouldn't have allowed him to have a debit card."

Allowing your son to pay off this debt may be the best thing that ever happens to him. It sounds like he sure needs some lessons in financial and personal responsibility.

don't you mean YOU should not have to pay off these debts? Aren't YOU the one responsible for any overdrafts on his bank account?? And anyway, what the heck kind of card does he have that would let him overdraft, by any more than maybe $100, if he was lucky, I mean unlucky?? and those are supposed to be debit cards, not debt. By the way, you might want to teach your son that it is not really very wise to give your credit card number over the internet, based of course on the security of the site itself, let alone your SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER.

Many, if not most, of the popular gambling websites have a Site User Agreement where the user agrees that they are 18 years of age or over before gaining access to the games.

He was fradulent by accepting the Agreement.

Ditto the advice above to use this as a teaching moment- better that he takes responsibility for his actions than have someone else rescue him from his own misdeeds.

Also- if he used a debit card, instead of a credit card, he shouldn't have any debt to pay off. A debit card removes funds from a checking/savings account in place of a check, but doesn't have a line of credit. Right?
