Stop Payment of a check

I am an Ebay member of Hawaii and just recently got an offer outside Ebay from a suspended Ebay member of Michigan. We were making transaction thru e-mail only and outside Ebay. However, I just realized later that he is a suspended member and retracted my deal w/him. I already sent payment for the item he is selling but I ordered a stop payment immediately. The item was not delivered to me either. He was upset and threatening me that he will sue me and I am liable for making a stop payment for the check. I explained to him that our transaction was null and void since he is not license to sell items outside EBAY. Please advise me if this claim is legal and If I can dispute this matter in the court of law.
