| My husband applied for student loan to be paid directly to school. School closes branch that he planned to attend. He was unable to attend at other location and notified them of this. The school kept the student loan money and now we are being hounded for this money. The Dept. of Education, Debt Collection Service is keeping his tax return each year. Since he never attended this school and they closed the location, shouldn't the school be responsible for this money? Is there any way we can get this off our back? |

| Yes, there is something you can do but it won't be easy. DCS is noted for their irresponsible use of the power that has been granted to them by the US government. I believe I have seen forms that the US Dept. of Ed has that allows you to file proof that you never attended the school. (Don't ask me how you prove you haven't attended a school!) They also have an omsbudsman's office to deal with situations like this, although I haven't had any luck with them. Call or write to them. You can find that info on the Dept. of Ed web site. DCS has been after me for a debt that was paid in full 15 years ago. They are ruthless. You have my sympathy. Good luck. |
