| SIZE=1]In 1996 I applied to go to college. When the semester was almost over I got a letter telling me I was denied for a student loan because I applied too late. I would have waited until the next year if I had known this. I tried to get a loan from my bank as well, but I finally just withdrew from class. I never recieved any credits or grades, but the school wanted me to pay $9000 anyway. If I had the $9000 to begin with, I wouldn't have applied for the loan =) Now the school has passed the debt to a collection agency, who wants to take me to court for $12000. I live with my parents so I don't own property, and I have been unemployed since January. What can i do about this?[/SIZE] |

| My keyboard is acting up and submitting these posts before they are ready. Sorry about it, I feel stupid having to reply to my own posts. By the way, I live in Massachusetts. |

the rest??Whats the rest of the story. Typically a school don't consider you registered until payment is made. There is a final payment date scheduled early in the semester. They would know by then if the loan had went through or not. If you failed some requirement of the loan or scholarship and had to repay, then it would be your responsiblility (or what ever your contract for that stated). If this is just a striaght forward sallie mae loan you would have been notified prior to the end of the semester. |

| It was a federal student loan I was applying for. I don't know why I was turned down, but when the school asked for the $9000, I asked for any documentation or contract I signed where i agreed to pay them myself. I figured there isn't one- there was only the paperwork requesting a loan. So they never supplied me with copies of anything, they just passed it along to the collection agency. I started in the January term and I was notified in April that I didn't get the loan. Since I couldn't get one from a bank on my own, I withdrew from classes figuring I didn't get the education that they said they were going to give me, so why would they need the money? |
