surprise old bill

What is the name of your state? California previous, now reside
in Virginia

I just received a phone call from a collection agency indicating that I owe $7600.00 from a debt since 1992. They said this debt is from citibank and they are a new collection agency trying to collect. They said that the original dispute was for $1500.00 and because I did not pay they added finance charges. I was in shock...and I still am. I never receive a bill or any notification about this.....can the statues of limitation work for this as well.
This is also time-barred. Right? They mentioned that they can garnish my wages for this. Is this possible????

Can someone pls give me advice for this?

Thanks,

Acording to www.creditinfocenter.com the SOL in both Ca. and Va. passed long ago. I'd send a cease & desist letter {CRRR} simply stating you've no recollection of this matter and in any event it is timebarred and never contact you about this matter again. Get a copy of your credit reports and be certain it hasn't been placed on your credit files.

To whom it may concern:
i have a similar situation to melrorer. i live in ca. after 3 and a half years received a call from a collection agency for auto rental car damages. i did cause the damage, but assumed my auto insurance had covered it. i never heard anything from the auto rental company - they did not try to call or mail anything regarding the issue. turns out the damage amount was under my deductible and my auto insurance didn't cover. is there a statute of limitations here? doesn't seem fair that this should pop up after over 3 years

Maybe. There's usually a limitation of actions in claims like this, have to check CA statutes to find out. If not, the SOL for debts in CA is FOUR years.. and you're not there yet.

Hello Bigun,

Thank you for your advice. I will be sending the "ceased"
letter. I am curious what the response will be from them.
But, I will soon find out......

Thank you again.
