time limit on collectionWhat is the name of your state? Massachusetts How long does a creditor have to wait before selling an account to a collection agency. I got a letter from an attorney in February 2002 for non payment of an account. The last time I paid the account was in November 2001 and I have heard that non-payment would have to of occured for at least 180 days (6 months). Please advise |

| I think you're confusing the time span which a defaulted account must be chargedoff with collection activity. A creditor can turn your account over to a outside collector anytime they please {assuming you are in default}. They don't have to wait until it is actually charged off. Also, they may not have sold the account- they may have assigned it to the lawyer. |

| Its in default when you stop paying. In the miniscule text that is your credit card agreement, they will specify when they consider an account to be in default. |
