Unclaimed Student Loan check

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NY State

Not sure if this in the correct topic area but about 4 years ago I was enrolled in college. I then dropped my classes and received a check from sallie mae for the remaining amount that i assume was left on the loan. I never cashed this check because I did want to go back. I didn't end up going back and now its 4 years later and I cannot find this check, nor do I know how to claim it. It was for about $2,000 which I don't even want for myself, I want that to go towards my loans. I emailed Sallie Mae and they said they cannot find any records of sending my anything and that the school would have sent it to me. But I am almost positive it was a Sallie Mae check.

So my question is, how can I claim this money? Am I even able to? Or is it just gone? It had to go somewhere.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I do need this money.
