Unsecured Loan Civil Action

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Florida
Circa 2004- husband took out a small unsecure loan est. $8,000. Jan. 2005 he survived 7 strokes. Feb 2006 he had another stroke. He has a railroad pension est. $24000. He is 88 years old diagnosed with dementia/Alzheimer’s; I gave up my employment because he made coffee with bleach, used acid to clean the carpet and just yesterday drank pine sol thinking it was bottled water. We sold our home and moved in with our son and his family. They take care of us so I can take care of him. I could no longer continue to pay for this loan and our medical, (COBRA for me) and the medications we are on and give my son money to help w/rent groceries etc ($500.00 to son).
We received a civil action summons against my husband yesterday and I am his legal power of attorney over money and medical decisions.
What is the worst that can happen regarding this? What is best course of action? I have made an appointment to consult an attorney but at $300.00 an hour I cannot afford them.
No judgments, please, just facts or your experience.

Exhausted What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

You sold your home, and you didn't have a couple thousand left to pay off the rest of that loan? There can't be very much left by now if you've been paying all this time.
