US debt but living overseasWhat is the name of your state?NY I am living in Australia but have student loans/credit cards from the US. What is the worst that can happen if I am unable to pay them? Can the US companies/government access my wages or property in Australia? Does my credit report cross over between the two countries? Basically can they touch me when I am overseas? Can anything happen to me if I go home for a visit (ie- can I be arrested, etc)? Thanks for the help. |

| You cannot be arrested for not paying a debt. What happens to credit reports depends on how the system works in Australia. I think it is pretty unlikely that wages or property could be attached in a foreign country. Anything is possible, but seems like a pretty far reach. Your student loans will live forever. The government has a long memory for student loans and can seize tax refunds and social security payments. Someday, unless you plan to die in Australia, you will have to deal with the student loans. In my opinion, now is better than later. The credit cards may not expire either. Some states toll the statue of limitations when you leave the state. |
