I know you're having a panic attack. You let the debt get too far into the process (e.g. judgment) before you started paying attention to it.

Get a second job. Sell stuff. Live on beans and rice.

Being a southern gal, I prefer fried potatoes and beans.

I was fortunate enough to have been extremely poor early in my life. I still remember when I was finally able to put $5 into a savings account (emergency fund) each pay period. I was grateful I had enough money in that account when one of the tires had to be replaced. It never crossed my mind to have a credit card back then - I couldn't afford payments.

I always saved first. Then I spent what was left over. It was an easy budget to manage. Once that money was gone - it was gone. The savings account was off-limits except for extreme emergencies. Basic food. Basic clothing. Basic shelter.

That's why I don't understand this "run away spending" with the credit cards. And I'll never understand why people get mad or upset when they have to pay back the money they borrowed, either willingly or unwillingly. Nothing is free. Even if it appears to be free, it comes with strings.

You should try to go to the Marshall's Office and file an application listing your expenses showing you cannot afford to give 400.00 per week. There will be a decision based on your documented expenses which may allow you to pay a bit less. Or...they may decide you have to pay the whole 400 per week.

Hmmm...knitpicking again eh? Okay...I'm sure this is right, unless the laws in my homestate of Iowa have changed. Like California, you can apply with the Court to lessen the amount being garnished from your wages. I've lived in Iowa for 30 years so I believe I know what I'm talking about and you are just trying to stir things up here.
I don't believe you were ever in Iowa wireless. Anyway...I merely suggested the OP should TRY to go and see if he can file an application. Is that wrong advice. It is better advice than you gave him.

No Willy I've never been to Iowa and believe me it is not on my vacation list either. My advice to him to get another job was right on. He will need it to afford the $400 a week he will be missing for his paycheck for a few months.

By the way...here is the info on Iowa garnishments. No where does it say about filing an application to show the Marshal's your monthly expenses. In fact take note of the part where it says that if wages are over $50,000, then 10% of expected earnings.

I was going to respond, but realized the only positive thing I can say about Iowa is that Terrible's Casino usually has a good deal on gas. Of course, we used that gas to make a beeline for the state line ...
