What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? VA

I am wondering how separate accounts are handled for a marriage. If I have an investment account that I had prior to a marriage and do not add any after marriage contributions, would there be any question as to who benefits from the account? I guess I am asking if there is a need for a pre-nup for significant accounts or if you do not co-mingle funds, can they still be separate?

Thanks!
