What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? VA

Long story short, I hope.

I was employed by an Accounting firm for 3 months. during that time I met another colleague and we decided to start our own practice.
We went in this partnership together and things didn't go well and I have now resigned.

At no time during the employment or in the partnership did I sign any agreement that I would not contact clients if I ever left.
It now comes to light that there is still a link between the previous employer and my former partner and they are now threatening me me not to contact any clients I have built relationships with.

The question is; can I contact these clients or am I bound by some business law that stops me doing so.

Any advice is gratefully received
