I need to break a contract

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NY

I do some I.T. consulting work and normally do not get in the middle between any contractors and clients I work with. To speed up the completion of a project I put the entire thing in my name. It is for programming services for a client that is no longer making the payments due per the contract payment schedule. Since the contract is in my name and I don't even have an MOU between me and my client, I am pretty much stuck.
