Pay Back

What is the name of your state?VA
my wife is a independent contractor for the Millitary giving horse back riding lessons. She gets payed in advance for the lessons she gives. She recently was told that they do not need her anymore. My question is does she have to pay the amount back that they gave her, or does she have the right to finish out the lessons? The contract experation date is Sept of 06.
