What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?Missouri

Hired a house painter, tried to fire him this evening due to very sub par work, excuse after excuse and has actually created more of a problem on our homes exterior. As per contract, we made initial payment with balance due when job is complete. When we told him this evening that we didn't want him back, he reminded us we have a contract and he would hate to take it any farther, meaning law suit or lien on the home. No where on the contract does it state any of this, just simply final payment due on completion of the job. Does he have a leg to stand on here legally? Thank you

Yes, he could have a legal leg to stand on. He has a contract with you that helps support him. How much support the contract gives him depends on the wording of the contract.

You might wind up having to pay him for any paints and supplies he purchased specifically for the job.
