Backing Out of Contract

west virginia - recently my wife and i put down a $2500 deposit and signed a contract on a home being built by dan ryan builders. about a week and a half before we were to have our pre-construction meeting with the builders we saw a home in a neighborhood in which we always wanted to live. when we talked to dan ryan about possibly backing out (even if it meant losing the $2500) they said that because the builders had already gotten the permits and were ready to break ground it was too late to back out. my cousin, a lawyer, looked over the contract and said that it would be up to them whether or not to keep the deposit and that they could even force us to complete the purchase. is there any way out and could they force us to build the house?

I would agree with your cousin. See if you could negotiate with the builder.
