Home Sold Under False Pretense

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NC

I bought a piece of property last year. The home was supposed to have city water and septic. The previous owner lives next door and I have recently found that the septic tank may be on his property and the water meter for his home and the home he sold me is on his mother's property.

Unfortunately, I did not have the property surveyed or inspected prior to purchase. I just took the previous owner at his word.

I would like to know what my legal options are.

Have a survey done to define the property line, have a septic tank installed on your property for your house and call the local water authority and see how much they'll charge you to move the meter. Of course, you can always let the water company keep the meter right where it is and hire a plumber to install a water shutoff valve for your house.

**A: I suggest you read the NC state real property disclosure law that was applicable in this matter. Then post back any specific questions after your reading.
