Long Lawsuit

State of California

My parents tried to sell one of their houses 5 years ago with their real estate broker friend. The broker did not know there were minors on the title of the house and the buyer had to wait a long time ( more than 6 months) for the house to be legally sold to them. However, weeks before the house is ready to sell they pulled out and bought another house somewhere and started suing my parents as well as all the people in title of the house. The buyer is a lawyer and he sends notices about once every year hoping we would wear down and give in. He is suing for the time he spent in his relative's house during the time he was homeless getting ready to buy our house and the difference he paid for that house as to purchasing ours. My questions are: 1. Isn't our real estate broker the one to blame for the uncleared title problem? 2. Can we counter by suing them for the cost of attorney fee piling up the last five years? 3. we received a letter from the court stating that we were missed to show up for the lawsuit but we never receive a summon, what can I do? My attorney didn't receive anything either, is he supposed to receive something?
