Need to get out of co-ownership of home

I am co-owner on a home in Michigan. I have since moved to Florida. The co-owner doesn't want to sell and is in no position to buy the house due to credit problems. My wife and I are trying to purchase a home in Florida. Are there any options, whether legal or not, that would relinquish our burden. We will not qualify for a new loan as long as I have the loan in Michigan
