A Professional on my side...

What is the name of your state? PA/NJ

We are buying a new home in a development. We hired a lawyer to review the builders contract who was recommended to us by a prominent friend in the RE industry. Lawyer let us down by failing to ammend the contract in our best interest -- for example, we were told--several months after signing contract-- by sales person that we should have amended contract so that seller pays transfer tax (as is customary in NJ). Lawyer failed to do this. When we questioned salesperson they told us -- call your lawyer right away, even though the contract is signed, there is a way to get out of it. I called lawyer, who promptly told me there was nothing he could do and was off the phone in less than five minutes. A month later we received a bill $300 for reviewing contract and $150 for follow up phone call.

Husband and I called him to dispute the charges and he told us that "he talked to someone at our builders sales office and they told him not to ammend that part of the contract that it wouldn't be accepted." We asked him who he spoke with and he replied ""a man". There are no men in the sales office. He then revised his statement to say that he spoke with me about it and I told him that they wouldn't accept the contract ammended that way. (I never did such a thing.)

My response to this whole thing is -- why would I hire a lawyer to review a contract to have to tell him what to do. Isn't the point of hiring a lawyer so that he can help us with something we don't know about???

I've disputed the bill -- lawyer says we must pay. What do I do now?

His mistake will cost us $3500 at settlement.

Call your state Bar Association and ask for the contact info for filing a complaint against the attorney.
