seller wants to back out

What is the name of your state? California
We were in the middle of buying a home and the seller cancelled a week before closing. Reason stated that the only reason the house was for sale was due to a family member being very ill and needed money to help him. The family member died and they see no reason to continue the sell. They signed the offer acceptence letter after his death. Is there a case to go after punitive damages since we lost other houses in the process? will it effect us buying a new home? What is the name of your state?

If you have signed contracts theat have not expired and have no contingencies that would prevent such you can sue the seller and make them live up to the contract.

Or you can go to small claims and get what ever you can and move on to find a home that may not take as long as this will to resolve.

That is entirely your decision to make.
