Selling with non-permitted addition

What is the name of your state?Homeowners in California want to sell a property they have owned and lived in for over 25 years.About 10 years ago, they had a room addition built but did not pull a building permit. What is required for them to sell this property?

I'm going through the same thing in California. I added an addition by closing my patio and had a month to do it so I did not go through the city to get permits. Now I want to sell. At first my real estate agent said to just disclose it. Of course I would not be able to include it as square footage. I am more concern about liabilty and a couple people on this site said I could be liable if lets say there was a fire in the room and it injured somebody. I am still trying to find out more with my agent and may even have the city try to permit it after the fact. If not, I just may tear it down. If I find out more, I'll post it.

Thank you HomeGuru and slim23 for responding. These homeowners do not have a real estate agent yet. They are just wondering if there is anything they should know before listing with one. They want to do the right thing, including full disclosure about everything.Does anybody ever buy a property such as this one?And if they do purchase this property with full disclosure, are the sellers still liable for anything after it closes?Thank you in advance....LWF
