| Unknown special assessment on my home What is the name of your state? Minnesota
I am in the process of selling my house of 8 years. My agent told me that we have a special tax assessment for gutters, curb, and street. We purchased the house in 1999 from the people who built it so are the second owners. Our purchase agreement did state that the sellers knew of "...no liens, assessments..." etc on the property yet they had been paying it for two years.
It is my fault for not noticing, but now there is still over $1300 left on the assessment and I want to sell.
The law office that handled the transaction says that the statute of limitations has passed so we can't go after the abstractors and all we can do is send a letter to the original owners and "hope" they are nice enough to pay the $6000+. (amount I've paid + what's left). I had to laugh at that one.
Isn't that why I paid the lawyers fee for at the closing? So that things like that wouldn't be missed? I was a first time home buyer and had no idea of such things.
Any advice is appreciated. |
