wrong name on old title

What is the name of your state? california

My father bought a piece of land over 50 years ago. The name on the title is his name and the partial name of another person. It only lists the first and middle name, no last name of the other person. My father never bothered to get this corrected and the deed was in a safe deposit box. He dosen't even know why there would be a second name on the deed. Now he wants to sell the land, but can not identify the other person. Since the other name is invalid, how can we sell the land? My parents are afraid to sell the land even though they are the full owners.
