Does any one know if a father gives up his parental rights to a child, can he still be ordered to pay support for that child?

IF there is an actual legal "termination of parental rights" (typically only granted to allow for an adoption of the child by a third party or to allow for "ward of the state" status to protect the child from an abusive/neglectful situation)the parent whose rights are terminated is no longer responsible for financial or emotional support of the child as they are now no more family to the child than the milk man .....HOWEVER, be aware that any arrearages will still be considered the parent's responsibility to pay off as they are an existing debt already owed.

A parent can give up their righs, but not their obligation. No one can force a parent to exercise their rights, but they can be required to support their child. The only way to be freed of the support obligation, as usmcfamily said, is for another person to legally adopt the child or make the child a ward.
