How to establish paternity

Hey everyone! My question concerns how to go about finding out paternity. My friend may have gotten a girl pregnant and wants to take care of the child if it is his. Currently it has yet to be born, but he wants to be prepared for what he needs to do to have a paternity test done. Does anyone out there know exactly how this process works? Also anyone have any knowledge of the specific child custody laws in West Virginia or where I should direct him to find relaible info?
