california- my daughter's ex-husband told the judge he wanted to give up his parental rights to their daughter (so he would not have to pay child support-he says he can't afford it) .the judge said no so he said he wanted "nothing to do with my daughter or their daughter" during the final divorce proceedings yesterday. so the judge awarded her full custody. their original custody agreement was set as joint custody with her as the custodial parent. our grandaughter has always lived with our daughter with her ex having visitation of every other weekend. so now she has full custody. does this change the original visitation schedule especially since he stated in court he wanted nothing to do with their daughter?

You didn't specify if the prev. "joint" custody order was for physical or legal custody.
If it was previously joint physical custody- then yes visitation changes because now he doesn't have 50/50. Look on the paperwork, it usually determines a visitation schedule. ie; rotating weekends etcetera.
If it was previously joint legal custody- then changing it to sole eliminates the father's ability to make decisions regarding legal, educational, medical etc. decisions regarding the child. Again it may still allow for a visitation schedule. Whether or not the father chooses to exercise his visitation (if there is some) is another story.

Sorry for the child in all of this. One can only hope the father changes his mind at some point in the future- A child deserves both parents in their life.
