Is it possible to have a judge order a psychiatric evaluation on a parent as part of a custody or visitation hearing? If so, what does it take? (we're in Minnesota)

Yes it is possible I don"t know about your state in particular but in N.J. they can. It is often referrred to a best interest evalution or Parenting Evalution. You can request it your self but must be able to prove the need. Also it would probably be done by a private evaluator which the cost would be incurred by the person who requested it but also that means you get to pick the doctor. That person will look at all evidence you present to themas well as contact people who each of you feel has a connection to the case and will have involvement with the child. Custody can be determined by this report so don"t take it lightly.
