What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MN The ex wife has put a child on an utility bill and the utility bill is up too $800, is the child responsible for this bill? If so, what can be done to get his name off and save his credit? Thanks for any advise.

How old is the child?

Assuming that he is still a minor, notify the utility company that your ex fraudulently put her utility bills in the child's names. They'll fix it.

I truly despise parents who do this to their children. A friend of my daughter's recently rented a home and then discovered that she could not get any utilities hooked up because her mother had run up bills in her name, and never paid them, many years ago.

Its a horrible thing to do to your children.

The child is now in his 20's, if she put him on their fraudulently, could he get his name off and get her name on and not be responsible for the utility bill?

Was the child responsible to pay?
Eventually no, but it took a very long time and the child had to put down a huge deposit to eventually get service.

If your child is a legal adult, AND lives in the home with his mother, it might not be possible to get his name removed. If he does not live in the home with his mother, then he may be able to get his name removed.

Depends on the circumstances. If the 'child' went along with it, then he's probably liable.

OTOH, if the 'child' didn't know anything about it and just learned of it, he should immediately contact the utility company and say that he just learned that someone falsely used his name for their utility bills and ask for it to be removed.

I would also suggest contacting the police and filing an identity theft report and notify the credit bureaus. If she's using his name for her utilities, who knows how much debt she might have piled up in his name. When faced with identity theft, the key is to move quickly.

The adult child could file identity theft charges against mom. A police report would need to be filed. The adult child would then proceed to file a claim with each creditor mom used the kid's name.
