My husband went to court 8 days ago and took $1000 with him towards his support. They told him that he would have to come up with another $5000 purge in ten days or he would be put in jail. This is extremely unreasonable for such a short period of time. We have sold pretty much everything we own to come up with $2000. Do they need the whole amount or will they work out a payment plan to come up with the rest? He has left messages with his lawyer, but he hasn't got back to him.

First of all if he is behind 6k then he messed up big time. He needs to come up with it. He doesn't get to decide when he is going to pay up on his arrearages when he is found in contempt. they can take all of it. He had a payment plan -- it was called a monthly chlid support payment. he didn't pay it. The court is not going to buy the fact that he will pay it now when he didn't the first time around. It is not extremely unreasonable -- what is unreasonable is that your husband did not follow the court order, got caught, was found in contempt, and is now whining because he has to pay what he was supposed to be paying all along. He didn't have a short period of time to come up with it originally -- how long didn't he pay support? How far is he behind? Apparently the court is out of patience with him and he has just run out of excuses. If he doesn't pay he goes to jail until he can pay.
