end of child supoort; child graduating

According to the Divorce Decree, child support for my son ends when he turns 18 or graduates from high school, whichever is later. Well, he graduates June 2nd this year. I currently just mail in my payments to the Child Support Dispersement Unit, so there are no employer deduction orders that will have to be stopped. Here's my question. Once he graduates, can I just stop mailing in my payments,or, legally, do I have to do something? My ex and I are on good grounds and can decide when my last payment will be, but I just want to make sure there is nothing I have to do through the courts. We are in San Antonio, TX.

It should not be necessarily for you to do anything through the courts.

really? I always thought that something had to be filed in court to acknowledge age of maturity and cease child support payments? Ho does the enforcement office know the child experienced an event leading to stoppage of child support?

    I was just wondering.

    Thanks

    poster of original question

My other two kids have already graduated. With them, I had to hire an attorney so that my employer could stop making the automatic deductions. Since then I started doing contract work and have been sending in CS for my son. I too was thinking I didn't have to do anything legally to stop, but I just wanted to get others' opinions.

That is only necessary when there is wage garnishment. If the CSE has any question about it then he will be able to prove the child has turned 18 AND graduated from high school.

But that doesn't stop ex from coming back later and filing a new claim.

It's a lot more solid if he files with the court to stop CS. It shouldn't need an attorney.

I really don't think its necessary. His orders are specific. If there was some other event other than age 18 or graduation from high school, whichever comes last, then it might be different. After all, what's she going to file a new claim about? The child will be over 18 AND graduated from high school.

We get messages in the system to trigger actions we need to take as the child approaches 18 years old. We then have to verify the student status and review the CO for proper termination procedure.

I no longer need to punish, deceive or compromise myself. Unless, of course, I want to stay employed.
