KAALtv.com - Ex-colonel goes to prison for faked paternity test

AP) CARLISLE, Pa. - A retired Army colonel convicted of faking the results of a paternity test was sent to prison more than two years after he was convicted in a scheme to avoid paying child support for a girl he fathered during an extramarital affair with an enlisted soldier.

Scott Carlson, 55, of Swansea, Ill., was ordered Tuesday to begin serving his three- to 23-month prison sentence by a Pennsylvania judge after his latest appeal was denied by the state Supreme Court.

Carlson was convicted in 2008 on charges including conspiracy and attempted theft by deception for trying to cheat on a paternity test with the help of a classmate at the Army War College. His sentencing had been delayed as he appealed his conviction.

Carlson arranged for Col. Bruce Adkins to take the test for him in 2006 after the child’s mother sought increased child support, authorities said. The scheme was discovered when a county worker recognized that one man had arranged the test and another took it.

Carlson has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and testified at his trial that Adkins, of Douglasville, Ga., took the test without his knowledge.

"Will all due respect ... it is my full hope and prayer that the truth will rise to the top in this case," Carlson told the court, according to The Sentinel newspaper of Carlisle.

Adkins said Carlson had helped him with his studies at the war college, which prepares senior military officers for leadership positions. Adkins said Carlson then pressed him to take the paternity test.

Adkins pleaded guilty to similar charges. Carlson retired after he was charged in 2007.

something there really doesn't make sense. The mother was seeking an increase of child support. That would mean paternity should have already been established. Why would there be a new test?

then, unless the person that presented for the test used a false identification, so what that the wrong guy showed up. The lab labels the sample as that of Col. Adkins and it would presumably show he wasn't the father. I saw no charges for using or possessing false identification. The part of the lab tech realizing one person arranged the test and another one presented to take it as the basis for discovering the ruse makes it sound like they don't bother checking ID's.

then, theft by deception? Really? Theft by deception requires taking something. He didn't steal anything. He made an effort to avoid paying a reoccurring debt.

that's why I hate news in its current form. Always the short sensationalized snippet that can be read on TV along with the 49 other stories they promised to report on in that 1/2 hour of news, weather, and sports. Nothing that actually gives you any real information
