San Bernadino, California.

My husband has been paying child support from a previous relationship. The child is way over 18 now and they continue to bill us. I asked them why and it seems we needed to fill out a form to have these payments stopped. WE WERE NEVER INFORMED OF THAT!?

We were wondering when THEY were going to say it's over and we didn't have to pay anymore. That never happened.

So I called California to ask them if it's true about the form, they said yes and we would have to figure which form we needed on our own and that there was over 6000 to choose from!? Double:

Can you help us please?

Which form do we need and how do I find it?
Can we download it from the web?

The child is 21 now, are we responsible to pay from when he was 18 to 21 because we didn't fill out a stupid form we didn't know we had to do in the first place??

Yes, you are responsible for keeping track of your own legal situation. You'll have to file to emancipate the "child." I don't know what form to use, but here are some links to get you started in your research:

Also, many attorneys give a low-cost or free initial consultation. Check in the yellow pages for their ads. Use this opportunity to find out what to file, how to file it, etc., and also if you have any legal recourse for having overpaid. (I doubt you do, but you might as well ask.)

Thanks for your help. Very much appreciated.
I do find it hard that someone out there doesn't have the answer I'm looking for concerning the exact form we need. I would think 1000's of people had to learn this before us. I just get tired of reseaching, that's all. Why are things always made so hard in legal things like this. It seems that you either pay an attorney to get the answer you need fast or you're on your own for the answer. Both ways can run you into money. Like it's costing us now. :(

Thanks again for your help. Sorry you had to hear vent my frustrations.

Wow! That's sound like great news! I will see if that works right away! :D

I want to thank everyone who took time to help us! It's nice to know people are out there willing to volunteer their time to help people like us. :)

And remember - it's likely DAD that needs to do this as he's the one ordered to pay support.
