What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Tennessee
What recourse would a person have if they were chased by a repo driver that they thought was a car jacker. The police said that the driver of the tow truck was out of line in chasing the vehicle. As a result, the engine of the car was blown and possibly the transmission is ruined as well. The repossession papers were inaccurate and not signed by a judge or any court official. Should the person sue the repossession company for damages? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

None. How many car jackers chase folks in tow trucks?

The police said that the driver of the tow truck was out of line in chasing the vehicle.
Out of line, yeah, illegal, no. It appears the officer did not think a breach of the peace happened.

As a result, the engine of the car was blown and possibly the transmission is ruined as well.
Bummer, dude.

The repossession papers were inaccurate and not signed by a judge or any court official.
Not required. Under Tennessee law, a car or truck finance company has the right to use “self-help” to enforce its rights if you default on your installment note. You failed to live up to a contract. The legal owner of the vehicle can take it back without warning if you fail to live up to the contractual agreement.

Should the person sue the repossession company for damages?
The person did not prove the repossession company caused the damages.

The driver of the vehicle caused the engine and transmission damage ... not the tow truck driver. Was that possibly you.

Or, maybe I caused it by remote control ... come on.

SJ doesn't drive those big rigs so he's clean!
