civil case needing to be continued

What is the name of your state TN.

I am pro-se in a civil trial and I didnt read all the language in a motion set forth by the plaintiffs. The case has been calendared since march. The attorney for the plaintiff set the trial for this coming friday. I didnt read the language of the motion as i had a chance to delay the trial if I had wanted to. I actually do need to, as I havent filed my discovery yet, nor did I subpeona my witness(she just had a baby 2 months early and the baby was in an incubator). I called and asked the clerk what I needed to do to prolong the trial date so that I can file the discovery and subpeona my witness. She told me that I could file a letter and have it sent to the plaintiffs attorney. But, what would I need to have to say, or how would I file it? Would I file it as if it were a motion? I dont doubt that I will get the time looking at the circumstances. But a little help would be appreciated about this letter that I need to file first.

YOu need to file a motion for continuance. However don't expect it to be granted as you have done NOTHING since March and you had ample time.

Nothing stated by me should be taken as giving you legal advice or forming an attorney/client relationship. The devil is in the details after all.
