I am from Michigan. There is someone trying to sue me for defamation of charactor. I in no way defamed him. What can he do to me if he does try and sue. Its basically his word and mine.

It depends on which state laws are being applied in the lawsuit.

If the state has a "preponderence of the evidence" standard of proof, then he only has to prove it is more likely than not that you defamed him. This is quite possible even if it is his word against yours.

On the other hand, if the state has a "clear and convincing evidence" standard, then he will have to make a very strong showing.

It may come down to which one of you is the best witness at trial.
