I'm going to cut this very long story short as I have a specific question...

I'm a 17 year old (I turn 18 in 3 weeks - 5/15) boy in Wisconsin. My father, who was on parole, attacked me and went to jail for a few weeks, but while in the initial court hearing, requested that I not be able to take my car.

I paid for the car and have been paying for insurance (Direct withdrawal from my checking account) for 4 months (Did not have insurance previously, WI doesn't require it, but I'll be going to college in Minnesota, which does, so I got it). On the title under 'registered owners' it says "<father's name> OR <my name>"

My father has said repeatedly and in many people's presence (I'm sure I can find at least 1 person to tell a court they've heard him say it) that I paid for the car, it's my car, and the only reason his name is on the title is because I'm a minor, and that'll change once I'm 18.

I've talked to victim witness and they said to get a lawyer, but I can't afford one. I've got school, insurance, food, etc to pay for. I can't afford a new car and I can't afford a lawyer. They told me to write a letter to the judge, so I did - but have not received any feedback.

I was allowed to get SOME of my things from the house, but specifically denied me my car. The escort deputy was very rude and only allowed me about 10 minutes to get all my things (I work in computers and had to spend most of the time getting my computer in her vehicle, then had very little time to get clothes or anything else). While I was getting some of my things, I noticed he had flattened both rear tires on my car.

I've since tried to go out there again, to at least retrieve the rest of my books, college papers, and clothes from my car and the house, getting as far as my father telling a calling police officer that we would not be allowed on the property and would have to get a court order. There's already a court order in place for me to be able to get all my things EXCEPT my car, though - I don't think the police officer who talked to him on the phone knew this. I don't know why I should have to get another court order, though.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get my things, and more importantly, my car back? Is it even a possibility?

Take your court order to the police station and ask to speak with a SUPERVISOR. Explain your problems with getting your things and ask that they send another deputy with you to protect both parties.

If they don't do anything, go see the city attorney and file a complaint.

As for the car, unless it is specifically stated in the court order that you may NOT retrieve the vehicle, then tell pops to kiss your behind. It's legally yours OR his, whoever is smart enough to get it first.

That's what the OR is.

Thanks for the quick reply.

It does specifically state that I can't get the car, though.

I'll get a copy of the court order and bring it to the police station.
