What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Iowa

A "friend" took out a loan in his name. put his truck title up for collateral and paid off my wife's car. The total loan was for about 12,000.00, she never agreed and tried to stop him from doing it. She never signed any paperwork, was never contacted by the lender or anything. She did make some payments for him, but he recently made some threats to her and we want nothing to with him. Can we be sued for non-payment or since he signed the contract he is resposnible to pay? Thank you for your time
