Help I owe my ex-lawyer 10,000, he didnt win, I dont want to pay!!

What is the name of your state? CA

hi i am new to this forum, ill try to keep it short,
my girlfriend's mother once had a lawyer in Long Beach CA in family court. She was trying to get her blood daughters back from a wicked aunt but the aunt had all the aces in here deck and won by having the most influence and better lawyer.
flash forward to today few years afterward my girlfriends mom lost the case and the lawyer wants "unpaid fees." They had already paid the guy 10,000 and he wants 10 more, they have been dodging him since but now he threatened with a lawsuit, and says if she doesn't want a court date she should contact an arbitration place. They are both broke and Basically my girlfriend does not want to pay the guy because one he lost and two he is a slimeball.
I don't know if they signed a contract but what is the best way to defend against this kind of stuff if your broke, can't pay and don't want to pay, they don't qualify for the gov assistant legal help, but are there other non profit orgs that help those that are under the thumb of there lawyer?
any links, names, references would help,
I am stuck out here trying to help but i don't have access to a lawyer, either but if I could help her do research on what the lawyer could do if he sued and her rights I could really help her. It is rough on her and her mother they are all they have, the father has passed on as well so this has been really rough on them I want to help as much as I can.
thanks in advance any help would be great.
really appreciate it.

**A: stay out of this. Anyway, you have no idea what you are doing because the first thing you should have asked was, "what did the contract between you and your attorney state?"
