What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA

I had a judgment against me in 1989 for about $40K. The county was pretty aggressive in collecting and I have paid off about 1/4 of it. Roughly 10 years later (approx 2000), the collections stopped and haven't been heard from since. A novice friend of mine said that there every 10 years the plaintiff must file to have the case extended and apparently that didn't happen so the case lapsed. Any truth to this? What's the best way to verify the status without stirring things up too much?

Thanks
