What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA

According to CA law, my son must have his driver's license a year prior to driving anyone under 21. If he does drive someone under 21 and there is an accident, I assume I could be sued by the passenger's parent/s. What could typically happen in such a case? To what degree would I be held responsible? Child is covered on my insurance as licensed driver. Thank you.
