Due to some fraud and extortion problems with a private graduate school, I'm looking at filing a lawsuit against the institution.

My question is whether or not private universities are allowed to expel students for pursuing legal action against them. It's my understanding that they can pretty much expel anyone, at any time, for anything, so I thought it better to check before meeting with an attorney. The school is in California.
