Water well and neighbors in California

What is the name of your state?I live in Butte County California and am on well water. Our well is not sufficient and we are planning to drill a new one in a location approximately 140 feet from our neighbors well. It is agreed by the three well drilling companies we sought bids from that it is the most ideal location.

Our neighbors have voiced concern, however have not formally (in writing or otherwise)objected to the location. My thought is that as long as I follow code, I should be able to drill anywhere on my property.

My question is, are there water rights/laws that I should be aware of. Am I inviting a lawsuit if I do interfere with they're water source? Any help is appreciated.

If your city or county approves your permit to drill a new well then you should have no problem at all , water tables go quite a way under yours and others property and are for all to tap into where permitted . and your city /county govt center will know if there is any restrictions that would prevent you from drilling new well !
