What exactly happens if you don't purge contempt?

WV FAMILY COURT

I understand that when someone is in contempt, they are issued an order detailing his or her purge requirements. I also understand that the court keeps track of the deadlines for either compliance or monetary payments.

What happens when those requirements are not met? What happens next? Can the person request more time to comply? How long are they allowed to string the court along?
In this case, it is the custodial parent who may ignore the requirements.
