New Jersey,
Someone please advise me if i have a case please.
About six months ago, I got into a verbal confrontation with an ex-roomatte of mine. He pulled a knife on me, threated to kill me and I ended up calling the police. The police came, barely even questioned him and escorted me out as i was going to stay with my mother. Some guests of his had parked behind me in our driveway and instead of the police waiting for the guests to leave or at least move since they were blocking me in,, they came outside got in their cars and said good luck as they drove away. I ended up walking towards my mother's house since i didnt feel safe (almost 2 miles away) at 3 a.m. and when i was almost there they came back and called me and said they would now wait for me, they got a call but now were back at the house. The next day I has two friends of mine accompany me to the house to get a few belongings. Their father (an ex-nj state police officer) advised me to call the local police station and advise them of what happened, and since it was a bad situation to ask if they could send a police car. THe response was " yeah we remember you, we don't have time or people to babysit you". My friends' father then called back and a few minutes later 2 police cars were on site willing to help me collect my belongings. Upon returning to my room in the apartment i found my tv to be missing as well as a brief case with important documents (birth certificate, s.s. card) to be broken into. When i left i went to the police station to file another police report where i was told " we dont have anyone to take your statement come back later. I did return later that night, and it took over 3 weeks to get a copy of the report for insurance purposes. Finally I contacted the landlord thinking the whole ordeal was over. His brother was supposed to be put onto the lease in replacement of myself and his brother and the landlord set up a meeting for paperwork to be signed. The only problem was they witheld the prior month's rent and the owner wouldnt take me off the lease without the rent check. Since i was working at the time of the proposed meeting where paperwork would be signed, the landlord advised me to give the last check to his brother. I decided if one last rent check is what i needed to get finished with this ordeal i would cut it out of my own account, and make out a certified check to the owner. A few days later i found out not only did he not go to the meeting, but he gave the check to his brother. His brother then endorsed the back of the check and deposited it into his bank account. I went back to the same wonderful police departement to file yet another police report about the check, who told me " if you are not staying in dover now you need to go to the police department where you are staying". Even after I told them my permanent address was technically still in that city they told me i "wasn't their problem" and refused to do a police report. I went to my mother's police station who confirmed, I am a resident of the other city, and all crimes took place in the other city so i would have to get the police report done in the other city. He wrote me a letter which i handed to the other police department who then told me not only was the police department they sent me to wrong, that i would now have to " find out where the check was deposited and file the report there." I then went to my bank who confirmed the bank was deposited into a bank of america account litterally across the street from the police station. They finally took my information, made a police report and that was the end of it with no follow up investigation. After a few months of nothing getting done i filed and internal affairs complaint against them, who sent me a letter saying they would do an investigation and i would be notified either way of their findings, and to my surprise (sarcastically speaking) that was the end of it. I am now out the last rent check, and want to know do i have legal ground for a lawsuit (only U.S. law)? (only U.S. law)? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?
Someone please advise me if i have a case please.
