We aren't truly free. We are governed by those with the power to do so. Since 1066 when William the ******* became William the Conqueror and the common law began, those claiming common law status are ruled by the owner of the land--the King--and by lesser lords who hold some level of the fief. Here, the King is the government. The legitimacy of government can be debated (read Rousseau's "Of the Social Contract, Principles of Political Law" for a good start), but the discussion is pretty much irrelevant as the reality is you will be squashed if you challenge the government and they find out about it.
