Youth Sports

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

Can a Youth sports organization prevent a parent from choosing the team or club they want their child to play on?? Age and weight requirements are met and the 2 teams available to the parents are in that same classification. The problem is that several of the parents have had experience with one of the coaches and would prefer that their child not play for him. The club has instituted a rule stating that a boy cannot play for the other team unless the previous coach 'releases' him. The parents want to stay with the club. The coach is adamant about not releasing the boys. If they are forced to play for this coach because of this rule, they will be forced to leave the club.
Question - Does the rule preventing choice violate the parents and childs rights? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

Exactly which constitutionally protected right do you believe is being violated here?

Yes they can. If you're talking about soccer, CYSA-S south litigated this very issue back in the early '80s. Not from a civil rights viewpoint, but, civil rights don't have any real relevance to your question.

I'm not at all sure what legal right may be violated. However it seems that not having a free choice when there is a choice available and being forced to do something that may not be in the best interest of the child and/or family is wrong. I would like to know if it is in fact illegal or unethical and therefore not subject to change or chalenge on a legal basis.

There is nothing illegal. The unethical is the youth coach who is not releasing the player(s).
