Dude, no PC tech I've known has cared that much. The job is requested, done and the tech paid. The only time I've seen PC techs get squirrelly about something on a PC that was being worked on was when possible child porn showed up. That's almost ALWAYS reported.
Wow. I would never clear passwords willy-nilly. Seems blatantly irresponsible, regardless of how much or how little legal backing a tech might have in that scenario.

Are you perhaps still under the impression that there are any statutes regarding computer passwords? Because there aren't.
Consider me successfully informed. Thank you, cbg!

Good for you.

Sometimes the client is unreachable and the deadline approacheth. I'd rather crack the password and inform the client when they pick up their PC then make them wait any longer than necessary for their computer back.

I understand deadlines and all, but I still don't think I would hack the SAM file without some sort of consent and proof of ownership. A receipt for the machine is not necessary, but some familiarity with its contents is a minimum for me to do that.

Hmmm.. Maybe its time to add a password hack disclaimer to my TOS for just those cases you mentioned - unreachable client, unknown password. Thanks for the idea!
