The association placed a special assessment and says that each homeowner must pay $900 each month for the next 3 months in addition to the monthly association fee. Is there a limit on how much they can charge per month for a special assessment?

$900...ouch! Sounds as if the HOA is spreading around the cost of having to have paid lawyers to settle some lawsuit that the HOA lost...or a major cost of somekind.
What is that assesment for exactly? Find out and report it here.

The assessment may or may not be allowed in your agreed terms of the HOA at the time you signed your name on the bottom line at time of purchase.

Read back carefully all the documents that the Association is required to provide any owner.
You may find a clause in there that allows such an assessment.

They redid the roof because of the hurricanes last year. Supposedly the insurance only covered $20,000 because the deductible was over $100k or something like that.
